A wild world in the U.P.

Wildlife harvests are profoundly important to societies worldwide, providing food security and supporting the livelihoods of hundreds of million people. Artemis is the public database of government regulated wildlife harvests from around the world and includes data at the national or subnational level for number of animals harvested. By selecting countries, subnational jurisdictions (e.g., state, province), or species of interest using the dropdown menus, users can obtain harvest information along with several valuations including estimated meat yield, protein yield, and person-days of protein available from wildlife harvests.

A word from the team

Though important to people worldwide, the meat from harvested wildlife in many respects is a ‘forgotten food system’. This is due in part to varying systems of data collection making this information difficult to obtain and no standardized framework to compile these data globally. Artemis was created to help address these needs and allow valuations of wild harvests such that their importance can be better understood.
